The News Media Coalition has reached a temporary deal over media rights and ended its boycott of the Sri Lanka versus Australia cricket series.
The coalition also includes Agence France Presse, the Associated Press, News International, Reuters and Getty.
The boycott was sparked when Cricket Australia originally required payment from news organisations for admission to test matches and rights to photos taken at the match. Cricket Australia also limited photos and text updates and was charging a pre-season license fee and the retention of intellectual property rights.
Monique Villa, managing director of media at Reuters said she “can confirm that Cricket Australia has abandoned its attempts to impose a license fee for news access or limits on who can receive our news service,” according to a Friday MediaGuardian report. She also pointed out that the agreement “is provisional and expires on December 10” if Cricket Australia tries to limit regular news coverage again.
The World Association of Newspapers, a member of the coalition, welcomed the agreement.
“This agreement should inspire sports organisations everywhere to reach agreements that take into account our legitimate concerns, before disputes arise. It also demonstrates once more the importance of industry solidarity to protect news access, no matter what the sport,” said Timothy Balding, CEO of the Paris-based WAN.
According to a press release from WAN, the agreement means that rules on accreditation and access will be amended so that:
1.The new negotiated terms will apply for any Coalition members not yet accredited and will be offered to other news groups who currently have separate arrangements.
2.Cricket Australia will conduct an internal review to identify those uses of content owned by news organisations which CA is concerned may cut across its existing commercial arrangements.
