Overnight publishing threatens Newsquest jobs

The South Wales Argus could see 21 job cuts if parent company Newsquest closes its printing plant in Newport and switches to overnight publishing, HoldtheFrontPage reported Tuesday.
Executives at Newsquest, one of the largest regional newspaper publishers in the United Kingdom, are in talks with staff over whether to make the move, as currently only the Saturday edition of the Argus is printed overnight.
If the change is approved, all editions of the Argus will be changed to overnight operations, and printing will be moved to other Newsquest sites, HoldtheFrontPage reported.
“As a result of this review, it is proposed to close the Newport press facility and migrate Wales and Gloucestershire titles to other Newsquest printing sites who can offer more colour and produce our titles more efficiently without the need for pre-printing and inserting, thereby reducing costs significantly for the group,” said Gavin Steacy, Newsquest Wales and Gloucestershire regional managing director.
