On Wednesday, American Airlines launched in-flight Internet access for long-haul domestic flights, making it the “first U.S. airline to offer full in-flight broadband,” the European Journalism Centre (EJC) reported.
Passengers flying on the Boeing 767-200 aircraft can pay US$12.95 for Internet access on direct flights from New York to San Francisco, New York to Los Angeles and New York to Miami.
Other U.S. airlines, such as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways have started to develop the same feature. Meanwhile, Delta Airlines announced that it will soon have broadband Wi-Fi access for all of its domestic fleet, amounting to 330 planes, according to EJC.
Gogo, the mobile broadband feature on American Airlines, is offered by AirCell. Even though each session includes full Internet access, mobile phone and Voice over Internet Protocol are not available.
Newspapers have been given for free to airline passengers around the world for years. Internet usage in flights is the latest way for newspapers to develop plans to target specific readers.
