Göteborg: Publishers must come together for content control

Göteborg, Sweden – Publishers must come together to control their own content on the Internet, as well as protect media rights to freely cover sporting events, the World Association of Newspapers' president and News International's UK editorial services director told newspaper executives Wednesday at the 61st annual World Newspaper Congress.

WAN President Gavin O'Reilly urged publishers and newspaper executives gathered at the conference to adopt Automated Content Access Protocol (ACAP) technology, a non-proprietary, open system that allows the terms and conditions of Web sites to be placed in a machine-readable format, allowing publishers to control how aggregators and search engines use their content.

Göteborg: Strengthen and build on core business

Göteborg, Sweden - Newspaper companies are expanding in every direction – to online, video, mobile and beyond. And while growth and innovations are exciting new ways to reach more people than ever before and grow content monetization, publishers cannot afford to forget their core business: the newspaper, publishers agreed on Monday at the first session of the 61st annual World Newspaper Congress in Göteborg, Sweden.

“From now on, we have to be even bolder and more creative in the way we produce and distribute content. We have to be very aggressive in the way we organise our media companies. We have the challenge of what our public is going through, and newspapers, with their brands and credibility, will continue to be the guardians of freedom around the world,” Nelson Sirotsky, president and CEO of RBS Group in Brazil, told the congress.

World's press renews call for Russia to investigate journalist's murder

The World Association of Newspapers and the World Editors Forum have renewed the call to Russian President Vladimir Putin for a thorough and impartial investigation of the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist killed a year ago.

"We are seriously concerned that those who order or carry out violence against journalists in Russia enjoy almost total impunity from prosecution. It is estimated that 21 journalists have been killed since you came to power in March 2000," the WAN and WEF stated in a letter to Putin on the one-year anniversary of Politkovskaya's death.
